They describe the same family of glass-reinforced plastic from different angles. GRP and FRP are the material — glass fibre in a resin matrix. SMC, sheet moulding compound, is the way LVJIA makes it: a pre-mixed sheet of resin, filler and chopped glass that is hot-pressed in a steel mould under heat and pressure. Hot pressing is what gives an SMC water tank its consistent wall thickness, its dimensional accuracy and its smooth food-grade face, which hand lay-up FRP cannot hold panel after panel.

An SMC water tank is built from 0.125 m³ up to 5,000 m³ and up to 5 m high. Six pressed panel sizes cover the layouts: 3 × 1 m; 2 × 1 m; 1.5 × 1 m; 1 × 1 m; 1 × 0.5 m; 0.5 × 0.5 m. Tank dimensions are configured from standard panels. Non-standard panel dimensions are not offered as standard options. Panel thickness runs from 6 mm to 22 mm and is chosen by the water height above that course, held to ±0.2 mm, so the bottom rows of a tall tank are thicker than the top. Send the footprint, the head and the volume and the panel schedule is drawn around them.

The laminate used in an LVJIA SMC water tank is specified at a tensile strength of 60 MPa or better, a bending strength of 100 MPa or better and a modulus of at least 7.0 GPa. Surface hardness is Barcol 60 or higher and water absorption is held to 1.0 per cent or less, which is what stops a panel softening over years of immersion. Glass fibre content is at least 25 per cent. Tall SMC water tanks are stiffened with internal tie rods and an external frame sized for the head rather than added by habit.

Yes. The panels used in an SMC water tank passed all 20 of the 20 test items in GB/T 17219-2025, the Chinese standard for the safety of materials in contact with drinking water, and the test report is issued with the order. The moulded face is smooth and non-porous, so there is nothing for biofilm to key into, and the tank is closed with a sealed, vented manhole that keeps light and dust out. SMC water tank joints are closed with non-toxic sealant and gaskets rather than solvent adhesives.

Weight and corrosion. An SMC water tank weighs a fraction of the equivalent steel vessel, which matters on a roof or an upper plant room, and the material cannot rust, so it needs no coating, no cathodic protection and no repainting cycle. It is also a poor thermal conductor, which slows heat gain in a warm climate. Steel still wins where fire ratings, external impact or very large single spans dominate — and LVJIA builds both, so the recommendation is not tied to one product line.

That is the normal case. Panels, bolts, gaskets and the frame arrive flat-packed on pallets and are carried in by hand through a standard doorway, then bolted up in position, so an SMC water tank can be built where no assembled vessel could ever be craned. An SMC water tank partition can be moulded in to split the volume for cleaning without losing supply, and the tank can be raised on a plinth or a steel base frame to clear pipework underneath.

Production runs through six controlled stages — enquiry and drawing, sheet moulding compound preparation, hot pressing, trimming and punching, inspection and testing, then packing and delivery — in about 15 working days from drawing approval. Every finished tank is trial-assembled and checked before packing, and 100 per cent of finished product is inspected.
